Speaker
Susan Huntington, Dean of the Graduate School and Vice Provost for Graduate StudiesPassed out reference cards with phone numbers etc. for grad school and handouts about programs offered by grad school.
Workshops: Has anyone attended any workshops? Only a few here have. We have had a dissertation writing workshop every quarter for years and it gets good feedback. There have also workshops on careers outside academia. This workshop is also well attended and received. Also run workshops that cover many different disciplines to access information that you may not get from your department. Such as diversity, etc. Any ideas from you on workshops would be welcome. Also run workshops on finances for grad students.
About a half million dollars have been given to the grad school by the Pres. To fund interdisciplinary studies. These include minors and specializations that may enhance your areas of study. We are going to use $150,000 each year for 2 years to develop new minors and specializations. The second part of the money given to us we are planing to use for broad based seminars that would be interesting to many different areas across campus. We haven’t decided yet what the theme will be but it will be broad based. It will aslo have subthemes such as research methodologies, etc. We really want to know ideas from you as to what you would like this to be.
Academic misconduct: What it means to be a grad student and the discipline it takes to do this. We want to set up an academic code of conduct in conjunction with Students Affairs committee to form this and we want your input. With the advent of internet this is important to broaden the discussion about what exactly academic misconduct is and so you will be able to develop your own philosophy and be prepared for it during your career.
Grad school is looking for ways to fund development opportunities and we have come up with some through fundraising. We are looking for ideas form you on things to use this money for.
Is there a web site for lists of these minors? It is available on the Graduate School web page.
What is the latest on electronic dissertation? We have extended the deadline to 5 years to delay the dissemination and have created a new form to help expedite this. We are also trying to come up with a template to create the PDF form of your dissertation. Deferring your publication of your dissertation often depends on your area.
Once the dissertation is disseminated electronically does the grad school retain ownership? No, the student always retains the copyright.
Regarding the minors, I have noticed that there is a strong conflict in requiring courses offered at the same time that are required for the minor and your degree. This is the first I have heard of a problem, but I will look into it.
What about programs that are being phased out? Any program that is phased out, you will be able to finish your program and your funding should be maintained. If it is an RA position it is tied to your PI. There are not any programs slated for discontinuation at this time. If a program is phased out, it simply won’t accept any new students, but students that are already there will be supported.
Are you planning to fund any more monies for conference attendance in the Professional development fund? We would work with CGS to ensure that we are funding as many as we can. Another place that funds can be available may be at department levels. I have a donor that gives money every year just for student travel.
In my area we have cognates, how can I turn it into a true minor instead of a cognate? Nothing can be done unless each cognate designates minors.
How would I start that process? Talk to the faculty members of your courses. Instructions are available on the web on how faculty can do this. A minor consists of core courses. An interdisciplinary specialization has to have courses in 2 different
Who should we contact with suggestions for Professional Development Funds? Elliot Slotnik.
I. Call to Order
Meeting was called to order at 4:06pm by Pres. Depelteau.
II. Approval of Minutes for 13 Feb 2004
Approved by unanimous vote.
III. Officer Reports
A. President - Jamie Depelteau
What is the process by which we have invited speakers? CGS President has authority to invite speakers. It has been customary for the President to pick the speakers. Is there any way to give this power back to the delegates? Chair Daniels: the appropriate way to do this would be to draw up an amendment to the bylaws. Depelteau: I pick speakers that are involved with grad student education or who represent areas that are of interest to grad students.
B. Vice President - Kerry Hodak
Absent; no questions about written report.
C. Treasurer - Ann Farrelly
No questions or comments.
IV. Committee Reports
A. Events
Patty Cunningham: Does everyone get the new Buckeye net Grad Prof news? Isn’t that a good way for us to get info. There are things out at the union, etc. that are specifically targeted to grad students. There is a program coming called the Images of You conference. It is a conference on multicultural events. I have info on this if you want to submit a program or want to go. This is an excellent opportunity both as a presenter and attendee. The African American Heritage festival is coming the last week of April. It is a great event to come to. Info will be available soon and I will have more info at the next delegate meeting. May week is in its second year coming back. There are events planned for the first week in May. There are 80 events scheduled for that week. Coming to the Wexner center is the Winston Marsalis Quartet. Lots of stuff to do at the Wexner Center.
B. Outreach and Engagement
Chad Combs: We will talk to delegates next meeting. Concern was raised about the last event when one delegate was talked to in a condescending way by workers.
C. Ad Hoc Committee on CGS Resolutions
Sen. Cormier: An ad hoc committee has been working on a report on what resolutions have been passed over the past 5 years and what have come of this. We should have a report available by the next delegate meeting. We are waiting for one major response. Most of what I have heard has been that these are vary useful in making decisions even if we don’t get exactly what we are asking for.
V. Old Business
There was no old business.
VI. New Business
A. Resolution 0304-WI-018: A Resolution Opposing a Constitutional Amendment Banning Same-Sex Marriage.
Treas. Farrelly: The whole idea behind this is that we are the official voice of grad students on campus and we should take a stand about a constitutional amendment that takes away rights instead of defending them.
Del. Dodson: Questions about the 14th Whereas: needs to possibly be amended.
Del. Fraser: What is the results of this? Farrelly: Resolution would be sent to the Ohio legislatures and the President, and University officials.
Del. Clark: If we send this is it going to change anyone’s mind? Farrelly: We don’t know but that shouldn’t stop us from doing it.
Del. Pletz: Is this something we as a delegate body should be doing since this hasn’t even happened? Shouldn’t this body be concerned with things that affect grad students on this campus. Farrelly: That depends on what you feel that this body should stand for. It could be a difference of opinion.
Debate:
Del Oelgoetz: The way this is worded now is throwing down the gauntlet. If this is passed as worded, it will get attention. In the 6th Whereas: the question is what should the definition of marriage be? Whereas same-sex marriage does not pose a threat to the institution of marriage, statistics show in Sweden that where same-sex marriages are allowed, there are problems. In the final clause, the word "activist" should be dropped.
Del Clark: It is important for us to remember that we didn’t act on the DOMA when it was passed. Depelteau: We did pass a resolution concerning DOMA.
Del Pearson: Amendment to delete the 9th, 12th, and 14th Whereas clauses. If we really want to have an effect, these are very inflammatory and would hurt the purpose.
Del. Gray: I question why we need to delete them and not just edit them. For the sake of time, I would be glad to sit down with a committee and work on wording.
Del. Eggleston: I think we should be more proactive and rewrite this.
Del. Pearson: Call the question. Motion passed.
Del. Parker: I move to remand this to the executive committee. Second by Chair Daniels. Motion passed. If anyone has suggestions please email them to Ann Farrelly at farrelly.5@osu.edu. If there is any interest in forming an ad hoc committee please email depelteau.1@osu.edu.
VII. Delegate Issues and Concerns
Del. Tao: I belong to a group trying to form an Asian American Studies and we are circulating a petition to encourage the University to replace the Asian American Studies faculty who have left. Please see me after the meeting to sign the petition or to pick up petitions to take back to your departments.
Del. Parker & Sen. Jordan: We are on the Council on Enrollment and Student Progress. We are working on the academic calendar to address the issue of shortened summers and summer commencement falling on Labor Day weekend. There are a variety of options being looked at to deal with a shortened summer qtr. We are sending around a list of options that we would like for you to fill out so we can take your ideas back to the committee. Options: Nine-week summer qtr- 2 four-and-a-half week term (48 minute class periods) (some shortened summers Nine-week summer quarter- 2 four-and-a half week term (54 minute class periods) some shortened summers. Eight week summer quarter- 1 five week term (60 minute class period) no shortened summers. Ten-week summer quarter- 2 five week terms (48 minute class period) begin each quarter 2 weeks earlier and winter quarter beginning 2 weeks before winter break Ten-week summer quarter- 2 five-week terms (48 minute class period) same starting schedule as now, let summer commencement fall on Labor Day weekend sometimes. Email ideas to jordan.137@osu.edu or parker.453@osu.edu How will the 8 week 1 five week term affect budget constraints and full-term status. It should not affect them any too much. What about students who are taking some quarter and semester courses? With the split winter term option they are trying to align with the law school/med school schedule. Committee meetings are open and are held every other Tuesdays 3:30-5:30pm Bricker Hall.
Del. Pepper: Why are we not meeting at the Law School? The Law school doesn’t want student groups using their space if they are not in the law school. Can we look into other spaces if we are going to be here? We will check into finding other areas to meet. It is difficult to find space to fit all of the delegate body.
VIII. Announcements
Sen. Cormier: CGS is fronting a group to walk in the AIDS Walk. We currently have 9 people and would like 15.
Delegate Eggleston: Columbus Cultural Arts Center has lost a lot of their staff and are looking for volunteers to help do things like putting up exhibits. Contact eggleston.11@osu.edu
Del. Gray: Dance Department is having its OSU Dance Downtown March 11-13 at 8pm at the Riffe Center Capitol Theatre. Del. Gray: Dance Department is having its OSU Dance Downtown March 11-13 at 8pm at the Riffe Center Capitol Theatre.
