Council of Graduate Students - Minutes - 28 October 2005

I. Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 3:37pm, by President, Barbara Pletz.
II. Approval of Minutes
The minutes from the September 30 meeting indicated one unexcused absence. No delegates were unexcused for that meeting.
Guest Speakers
Dean of Math and Physical Sciences, Richard L. Freeman addressed the delegate body. Dean Freeman summarized the latest report from his committee and answered questions from delegates.
University Senate Secretary, Christian Zacher was introduced and addressed the delegate body. Secretary Zacher gave an overview of the functions of his position within the University governance system. His goal is to facilitate the working together of three constituent groups.
III. Elections
Following brief introductions from Vice President Baack, Eleanora Redaelli (Arts), and Aaron Sander (MAPS) were elected to the Research Graduate Council with no objection to consent.
IV. Old Business
Former Associate Dean of the Graduate School, and CGS Advisor William A.T. Clark and Former University Senate Secretary and Professor Susan W. Fisher were presented with plaques commemorating their service to CGS. p>V. Officer Reports
President Pletz: President Pletz notes that officer reports are available online. There are no additions to the online reports of the president, vice president, secretary or treasurer. Chair Patty Cunningham: Chair Cunningham reminds delegates of the Graduate and Professional Students Happy Hour on November 18 at the Ugly Tuna Saloona. Broom ball teams are forming. Everyone has been encouraged to participate. Chair Cunningham also announced that on November 5, OUAB will be showing Madagascar. Chair Chris Alvarez-Breckenridge: Chair Alvarez-Breckenridge has posted his Research Council report as a PDF on the CGS web site. Graduate Student Survey: Jane Evans reported on the Graduate Student Survey that will be administered during winter quarter 2006 to all graduate students. CGS is working with the Graduate School and Institutional Research to generate questions for the OSU-specific portion of the survey. CGS has agreed to advertise about the survey and PR Chair, Rob Crawford is working on designs for signs to be placed on CABS buses. CGS is considering sponsoring an incentive for survey participation. Delegates and other graduate students who are interested in being involved with the survey are encouraged to contact Sheila Craft in the Institutional Research office or Jane Evans. p>
VI. Delegate Issues and Concerns
Delegate Lexine Trask suggested that CGS encourage more effective training for graduate students on Institutional Review Board procedures. Delegate Steven Kinsey asked about the octagonal red stickers he and his students have seen placed around campus. Delegate Seth Young clarified that students have not been encouraged to deface the environment with stickers. Delegate Jessica Lucas said that the stickers were intended to be placed on surfaces such as individuals' binders. President Barb Pletz spoke about the university's Selective Investment in Excellence plan and the anonymous reporting line. Pletz polled the delegates informally to ask whether they would like to have Brian Hicks speak at a delegate meeting in the future. (There were 24 votes in favor and 7 votes opposed.)
