B. Vice President

Vice President Cherrington referred Council to her written report.

III. Committee Reports

A. Executive Committee

Kathleen Carberry reported that the Executive Committee met on July 16 to discuss the elections, upcoming Executive Committee retreat, and Organization and Elections matters. She noted that these items will be discussed at today's meeting.

  1. Organization & Elections Committee
  2. Vice President Cherrington informed Council that there was one mistake in the mass e-mail sent out regarding elections for Senate & RGC. The correct date for these elections is August 20, 1999, the date of the next CGS meeting. She stated that she has had many responses to the present recruiting efforts. She advised Council of a new committee, the Columbus Campus Signage & Wayfinding Plan Committee. This committee needs someone who does not live near the campus. It will meet every other month for about 2-4 hours. Vice President Cherrington then asked Council to notify her of their committee preferences.

  3. Orientation
  4. Vice President Cherrington stated that volunteers are needed to help stuff envelopes at the Graduate School on August 11. This mailing will go out to all new graduate students with information regarding the New Graduate Student Orientation which is scheduled for Sunday, September 19, 1999, from noon - 4 p.m. The Welcome Party will be on Friday, September 24. This event is open to all OSU graduate students. She then passed around a sign-up sheet for the envelope stuffing with blocks of 2 hour shifts. She stated that additional volunteers are needed for both events and to contact her for further information.

  5. Professional Development Fund Committee
  6. Interim Chair Brian Rivera informed Council that the PDF committee had processed 75 applications for the Summer Quarter competition. They were able to award 10 grants at the maximum amount of $300 per student. Award notification letters had not yet been issued, so he refrained from providing the list of winners. He stated that these letters would be going out next week.

  7. Housing

Housing Chair Ron Meyers announced that the housing project planned in the vicinity of 10th & Neil Avenues has been authorized by the university to hire an architect. He also said that the committee continues to negotiate the possibility of graduate housing in the Gateway area.

IV. Old Business

There was no old business.

V. New Business

  1. 1999-2000 Calendar

President Carberry asked for feedback on the proposed Calendar of Events for the upcoming year. None were mentioned from Council. She announced that the Research Forum is scheduled for Saturday, April 18, 2000.

B. Elections for 1999-2000 Senators & RGC

    1. Elections for Senate
    2. Vice-President Cherrington explained the roles of Senators and RGC Representatives to Council. Briggs Cormier introduced himself and stated his reasons for running for the Senate position in the Arts. There were no questions for him. He was elected by majority vote.

    3. Elections for RGC

Brian Rivera introduced himself and stated his reasons for wanting to continue in his position on RGC in the Engineering Sciences. Mark Hicar then introduced himself and explained why he was interested in the RGC position from the Professional Biological Sciences area. There were also no questions for either candidate. Both were elected by unanimous vote.

  1. Election of 1999-2000 President

Presidential candidate Ron Meyers addressed Council and stated his interest in the position. During the question period, Delegate Cantu asked nominee Meyers if he would consider better publicizing that the President and Vice President officer positions hold a 50% GA stipend. Delegate Cantu believes that CGS would have more candidates if this took place. He stated that it was not disclosed via publicity that these positions hold a GA appointment and that all graduate students are eligible.

President Carberry responded stating that the above information was published and has been available both on the web and the application forms. Delegate Cantu stated that the salary was not published and described it as being an "under the rug" dealing. President Carberry informed him and Council that the salary varied as it is determined through the Office of Student Activities, depends on a student's rank, and is negotiable and therefore not able to be explicitly published. Delegate Cantu continued that he wished for wider publicity.

Nominee Meyers then said to Delegate Cantu that he would appreciate any efforts to help better publicize these elections. He also stated that CGS has a high degree of integrity and that nothing occurs "under the rug." There were no further questions for nominee Meyers. He was elected as President of CGS for 1999-2000.

D. Nominations for CGS Secretary

Vice President Cherrington announced that current Secretary Sabiha Daudi has turned in her resignation due to unforseen conflicts with her academic program. Vice President Cherrington asked for nominations for the position and would like to hear from interested candidates. She advised Council that they could e-mail her with suggestions and she would contact the person to find out if he/she was interested. Former CGS Secretary Elizabeth Loentz explained the duties of the position emphasizing the additional commitments required as an officer who is also part of the Executive Committee. Delegate Libbon asked about the possibility of the Secretary position turning into a funded position. President Carberry explained that this would be very difficult since the other student government organizations, IPC and USG, only have stipends for the President and Vice President.

VI. Delegate Issues and Concerns

There were no additional delegate issues or concerns.

VII. Announcements

PDF Chair Brian Rivera announced that the new, updated PDF applications are now available in the CGS office.
