COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS GOAL: Increase compensation and benefits to graduate students, address excess work issues, and clarify employment guidelines.
- Obtain University commitment for increased minimum stipends
- Obtain University commitment to subsidize health insurance for funded graduate students or expand options of premium packages
- Advocate for domestic partners insurance benefits for students
- Refine benefits by clarifying services and lifting the drug cap
- Develop an employment handbook, including information on University and departmental compensation policies
- Advocate for the recognition of graduate students as employees when such recognition serves graduate student interests (i.e., parking, healthcare, retirement benefits, etc.)
- Achieve 33% signing rate of health insurance petition by funded graduate students
- Explore the level of graduate student work exploitation above 20-hour rule and methods for curbing such abuses.
DIVERSITY GOAL: Increase diversity within CGS and address the issue campus-wide.
- Sponsor a Spring Summit on Diversity (an expanded and revised version of the Diversity Forum)
- Amend constitution to better reflect the additional ethnic and minority group membership
- Co-sponsor an International Student Symposium with International Concerns Committee
- Increase linkages between international groups
- Promote OSU's new diversity website (to be hotlinked from www.osu.edu)
- Provide a quarterly diversity newsletter/calendar
- Partner with campus diversity efforts (dialogues, events, Affirmative Action, Diversity, Multicultural Center, Women's Place Committees)
- Expand role of diversity committee beyond programming to include policy development and analysis.
HOUSING GOAL: Continue progress for on-campus housing and expand housing support services.
- Monitor development of, and ensure graduate student input on, current graduate professional housing complex at Neil and 10th
- Advocate for development of second housing complex near Campus Partners' area
- Improve the coordination of services to locate housing for graduates (especially new students and arriving international students)
- Advocate for reduced rates of pre-academic year dormitory room rental for international and other early arriving students.
OUTREACH GOAL: Make the CGS commitment to Outreach and Engagement a priority to parallel the University's "top 5 issues" status of this concept.
- Identify a new leader for our efforts at outreach
- Define Outreach and promote the University's conception of it (http://www.ag.ohio-state.edu/%7Eengage/)
- Advocate for sustained support for outreach efforts in all areas of university activity
- Assume full responsibility for the BuckeyesWatch program and its management
- Promote sustained financial contribution to the University District Student Involvement Fund from central monies and/or student check-off funds
- Appoint a graduate student to the OSU Council on Outreach and Engagement.
ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT GOAL: Expand the opportunities and resources available to graduate students to for their academic and professional growth.
- Expand and promote the CGS Professional Development Fund (PDF)
- Expand and promote the Hayes Graduate Research Forum
- Support and promote professional development programs campus-wide (e.g., FTAD and graduate school programs, efforts of individual departments)
- Advocate for expanded mission for the Office of Faculty and TA Development and greater partnership between FTAD and the Graduate School on programming
- Advocate for multidisciplinary workshops on curriculum and scholarship
- Advocate for workshops on educational philosophy, liberal education, and advanced levels of TA training
- rank department efforts to provide workshops and programs and seek Graduate School support and recognition for departmental efforts.
VISIBILITY AND RESPECT GOAL: Use strategic communication to improve the presence, visibility and respect for the organization.
- Produce a CGS information brochure and a multi-year promotional item (such as a magnet); distribute these widely
- Produce an Annual Fact Sheet to be distributed through graduate studies chairs and website (e.g., "Things you need to know") to draw attention to policy changes, events, and key resources
- Develop and maintain an effective website, including production of an E-Voice online newsletter
- Ensure graduate student representation on all major university committees
- Develop and maintain contact lists, databases, email lists, and department graduate student organizations for better communication and networking
- Make better use of advertising (e.g., Lantern, website, Other paper, Columbus Alive - as appropriate)
- Create a PR/press person to communicate with media outlets
- Utilize delegates as our best information channels for receiving feedback and conveying information in a timely manner (especially delegate use of department listservs to distribute relevant information)
- Utilize Student Activities and Office of Academic Affairs calendar publication to promote events
- Strengthen relations with Graduate School and Graduate Studies Chairpersons
- Consider use of issue-specific listserv discussions
- Publish annually the achievements from the previous year's Goals and Priorities.
ORGANIZATIONAL STRENGTH GOAL: Improve the internal structures and member participation to create a responsive organization with the appropriate management support systems.
PARTICIPATION
- Maximize number and attendance of delegates at meetings
- Improve delegate orientation (including better information about University and CGS processes)
- Emphasize the importance of delegates as our primary linkage to the graduate student body and their needs
- Ensure graduate student representation on all major university committees
- Evaluate the need for reapportionment to more adequately represent students and strengthen CGS
- Create promotion materials for departments to identify delegates and show vacancies
- Create recognition programs for delegate and other committee service
- Provide greater social opportunities for members of CGS and the greater graduate student population
INTERNAL STRUCTURE
- Rebuild and Maintain a thorough file system, databases, and archives
- Achieve highest possible level of delegates, Senate, RGC and committee appointments
- Refine PDF criteria to enhance role of university service
MEETING STRUCTURE
- Educate members on and make better us of Roberts Rules of Order
- Utilize the parliamentarian
- Consider use of listservs for issue-specific discussion and information-sharing
- Consider multiple locations for meetings to better accommodate delegates from different campus areas
- Evaluate the level of information provided to delegates and adjust information provided to meet delegate needs
