An Act Establishing the 2003-04 CGS Goals and Priorities

Section 1. The purpose of this act is to establish the goals and priorities for the Council of Graduate Students for 2003-04, in accordance with Articles II and III of the CGS Constitution.
Section 2.The goals and priorities shall be:
Academic and Professional Support: Advocate for the academic needs of graduate education at Ohio State.
Develop and implement a Student Bill of Rights
Advocate for additional opportunities for funding graduate education at Ohio State.
Cooperate with and support the efforts of Faculty & TA Development (FTAD) to improve the quality of teaching at the University.
Publicize graduate student rights regarding intellectual property.
Compensation & Benefits: Advocate for the needs of funded graduate students.
Advocate for and obtain a written University commitment to subsidize 100% of student health insurance for funded graduate students.
Advocate for and obtain a written University commitment to raise the minimum stipend to $1200.
Ensure that all new fees are covered for funded graduate students by the University.
Advocate for and obtain access to domestic partner health insurance benefits for all students.
Advocate for tax exemption on graduate associate and fellow stipends at the federal, state, and local levels.
Advocate for the implementation of a University-wide standard letter of offer for all funded graduate students.
Diversity and International Concerns: Celebrate and promote diversity within the Council, the University community, the City of Columbus, and beyond. Work to ensure an inclusive environment within CGS and Ohio State.
Expand the annual internal report on diversity to include data not currently collected by the University.
(Co-)sponsor multicultural activities and events that increase our understanding of the diverse world in which we live.
Monitor the University's implementation of the new federal immigration guidelines for their impact on international graduate students.
Advocate for and obtain domestic partner health insurance benefits for all students, faculty, and staff.
G-QUE: Aggressively pursue the implementation of the recommendations within the Graduate Quality of University Experience (G-QUE) Report.
Participation/Visibility/Outreach: Increase the visibility of the Council within the University and Columbus community.
Better utilize local media and other publicity formats to ensure that the campus community knows what the Council does for graduate students at Ohio State.
Improve connections between the Council and graduate students across campus by making contact with graduate student organizations and graduate students in their individual programs.
Charge delegates to share information with the students in their programs as well as with the Council and students in other graduate programs.
Increase campus awareness of the Edward J. Ray Travel Award for Scholarship and Service and the Edward F. Hayes Graduate Research Forum.
Quality of Life: Address the non-classroom needs of graduate students, including their social and extracurricular needs.
Address the needs and concerns of non-traditional students.
Work with the Office of Transportation and Parking to ensure reasonable access to parking on campus.
Work to improve graduate student morale by increasing the interaction with the off-campus community and other aspects of the out-of-classroom experience.
Actively encourage graduate student participation in student organizations.
Sponsor informational sessions on Student Health Insurance benefits and Wilce Health Center Services for graduate students.
Work with Off-Campus Student Services on graduate student needs.
Provide opportunities for graduate students to participate in community outreach.
Relationship Building: Improve Council relations with the University and Columbus community and create allies to advocate for graduate education at Ohio State.
Increase and improve interaction with Faculty Council, Inter-Professional Council, and Undergraduate Student Government counterparts through electronic communication, occasional invitations to committee meetings and co-sponsered events.
Improve relationships with administrators including deans, department chairs, and graduate studies committee chairs.
Obtain the graduate program's secretary/coordinator's email address from each graduate program and utilize these contacts to reach more graduate students accross the University.
Maintain the good working relations with the central administration that CGS has developed over the past few years.
Section 3. This act will take effect immediately upon approval at a regular meeting of the Council of Graduate Students.
