An Act Establishing the 2004-05 CGS Goals and Priorities

Section 1. The purpose of this act is to establish the goals and priorities for the Council of Graduate Students for 2004-05, in accordance with Articles II and III of the CGS Constitution. These goals and priorities will guide the Council of Graduate Students' advocacy and actions in 2004-2005
Section 2.The goals and priorities shall be:
Administration
Be an active participant in all discussions about the role of graduate education and the Graduate School at Ohio State.
Maintain close collaborative ties with IPC, USG, and other campus groups.
Create standing rules on spending and reimbursement.
Assessment
Add demographic questions to the delegate application.
Begin work on G-QUE II.
Compensation and Benefits
Investigate and make recommendations regarding childcare on campus.
Ensure that the ad hoc Graduate Compensation and Benefits Committee (GCBC) becomes a University Senate Committee.
Increase the minimum stipend to $1400 a month.
Ensure that any newly-created fees are covered for Graduate Assistants.
Increase individual health insurance subsidy to 100%.
Increase family coverage of health insurance subsidy to 85%.
Investigate flexible spending accounts for health care.
Implement a policy on leaves (e.g., sick, bereavement, parental) for all funded graduate students.
Events
Organize and implement four events and collaborate on at least two events with Interprofessional Council (IPC) and/or Undergraduate Student Government (USG).
Find sponsorship for delegate meeting refreshments.
Governance
Co-author and implement, with IPC and USG, a Student Bill of Rights.
Government Relations
Work with the Ohio State administration and graduate students throughout the state to inform Ohio legislators on the social, political and economic impact of graduate education on Ohio.
Continue participating in "Educate Your Legislator Day" in Washington, DC.
Outreach & Engagement
Establish a liaison with Project Community.
Sponsor a minimum of one service event a quarter.
Establish a working relationship with a minimum of five graduate student organizations.
Public Relations
Create mechanisms to publicize graduate student accomplishments on a regular basis.
Enhance public relations opportunities via CABS, e-mail newsletters and the CGS web site.
Continue to increase campus awareness of the Edward J. Ray Travel Award for Scholarship and Service and the Edward F. Hayes Graduate Research Forum.
Quality of Life
Investigate and address the needs and concerns of non-traditional students.
Investigate and address the non-classroom needs of graduate students, including their social and extracurricular needs.
Safety
Work with USG and IPC on University safety issues including lighting, police presence, community building programs, and the effectiveness ofthe Student Safety Escort Service.
Work with campus planners to install bicycle paths across the university.
Section 3. This act will take effect immediately upon approval at a regular meeting of the Council of Graduate Students.
