Annual Goals and Priorities 1999-2000

G-QUE Goal: Obtain implementation of the G-QUE report.

1) Obtain CGS input into next draft of G-QUE in October 1999 and co-present to the OSU Board of Trustees in December 1999;

2) Obtain University commitment to implement the no-cost and low-cost recommendations of the G-QUE no later than August 2000;

3) Obtain a University commitment in the 2000-2001 Annual Leadership Agenda, or sooner, to fund recommendations which require significant funding.

Housing Goal: Substantially increase safe, affordable on campus graduate student housing

1) Increase graduate student housing by 500 units in three years;

2) Allow graduate students to participate in the faculty staff home-ownership incentive program.

Compensation and Benefits Goal: Increase compensation and benefits graduate students receive, and address concerns with excess work hours

1) Obtain University commitment for increased minimum stipend for graduate students and to provide greater information to graduate students about University and departmental compensation policies;

2) Obtain optional dental insurance benefits;

3) Increase insurance benefit and payment options for optical benefits;

4) Address domestic partners insurance benefits;

5) Improve information and procedures concerning graduate student enrollment in retirement programs. Investigate additional policy recommendations;

6) Obtain pretax deduction of health insurance benefits;

7) Obtain monhtly payment option for health insurance benefits for all graduate students;

8) Obtain monthly payroll deduction option for health insurance benefits for GA's;

9) Create CGS Ad Hoc Compensation and Benefits Committee to address issues.

Graduate Student Development Goal: Increase support for graduate student professional development fund, the number of professional development and preparation workshops provided to graduate students, and develop University support for Service Learning and Community Based Research.

1) Obtain University commitment to fund the G-QUE recommendations related to this goal;

2) Cosponsor, or obtain additional workshops with FTAD on Preparing for the Professorate, writing a curriculum vitae, and other workshops;

3) Obtain agreement from the Graduate School to provide increased number of workshops on how to write journal articles and dissertations;

4) Ask Office of Research to cosponsor workshops;

Graduate Student Development Goal: Outreach and Engagement Goal: Increase University commitment to outreach and engagement, including in University District, and support and development of graduate students in Community Based Research and Service Learning to advance and in the university district revitalization.

1) Establish CGS Ad Hoc Outreach Committee to address service, service-learning and community based research advocacy;

2) Advocate for university support for infrastructure (staff, facilities, operating funds) necessary to increase Community Based Research (CBR) and service learning;

3) Work with Campus Partners, Student Affairs, and Business and Administration to address community safety and living conditions. Take lead in piloting and evaluating University District Student Block Leader program;

4) Support Community Commitment through participation in and evaluation of programs.

NAGPS Goal: Provide national exposure for CGS and Ohio State through hosting the NAGPS Annual Conference and continuing involvement in NAGPS leadership.

1) Cosponsor conference. Obtain OSU funding to help sponsor the conference and highlight OSU

2) Continue to participate in NAGPS leadership.

Diversity Goal: Increase diversity in CGS and address issue at OSU.

1) Amend CGS constitution to include additional ethnic and minority and orientation groups;

2) Continue to sponsor diversity forum;

3) Create International Concerns committee in CGS to increase attention to their concerns;

4) Obtain funding for International Concerns committee to sponsor event, program.

Visibility & Respect Goal: Increase the visibility and respect of CGS and the contributions of graduate students to teaching, research and service missions of the University.

1) Increase partnerships with USG and IPC;

2) Establish periodic meetings of Presidents and VPs of student governments and student trustees;

3) Address GA advising issues;

4) Develop quality brochure concerning CGS;

5) Increase connections to existing organizations. Obtain and use contact names, email addresses;

6) Establish connections to those organizations beyond departmental organizations;

7) Use the Lantern for advertising;

8) Utilize Student Affairs master calendars/OAA to communicate programs;

9) Improve connection and communication with Office of Student Activities;

10) Increase graduate student representation on significant University committees. Work with USG, IPC, and Senate rules and Steering to develop appropriate rules;

11) Increase relations with graduate school to access key players;

12) Work with graduate studies chairs to increase our name recognition and visibility;

13) Utilize directed marketing to graduate faculty for CGS services.

CGS Participation Goal: Increase attendance and participation at CGS meetings, committees, programs and events through the following actions:

1) Publication of attendance and participation rules;

2) Enforcement of same rules;

3) Developing more meaningful meetings;

4) Consider changing meetings to place delegate issues and concerns first on agenda;

5) Advertise meeting speakers to more graduate student, not just delegates;

6) Sponsor Town Hall meetings;

7) Provide a meeting location and set up more conducive for discussion;

8) Provide food and/or happy hour following meeting;

9) Have CGS attend departmental orientations, especially those without delegates;

10) Send letters to Delegates and Graduate Studies Chairs before delegate terms expire;

11) Increase recruitment of Senators and RGC Committee members;

12) Increase utilization of world wide web;

13) Use Email to more effectively advertise programming;

14) Develop descriptions of committee representatives duties, including request to forward committee minutes;
