AN ACT ESTABLISHING THE 2001-02 GOALS AND PRIORITIES
Passed September 28, 2001
Section 1. The purpose of this act is to establish the goals and priorities for the Council of Graduate Students for 2001-02, in accordance with Articles II and III of the CGS Constitution.
Section 2. The goals and priorities shall be:
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS GOAL: Increase compensation and benefits for funded graduate students to competitive levels relative to our benchmarks peer institutions, address excess work issues, and clarify employment guidelines.
Obtain University commitment for competitive compensation for all funded graduate students in three (3) years.
Follow up with University commitment to expand health care subsidy to at least 85% in three (3) years.
Advocate for domestic partners health insurance benefits for students.
Refine health insurance benefits by clarifying services and offering options to students to match their personal needs.
Partner with Human Resources to develop standard contract language.
Develop an employment handbook, co-published with the Office of Human Resources, including information on university and departmental compensation policies.
Collect documentation of graduate student work exploitation above their appointment with the intention of presenting this to the Graduate School or the Office of Human Resources as our estimation of the current situation.
Establish a committee to study the issues and make recommendations pertaining to graduate students with dependants.
Explore ways to centralize and strengthen oversight of all GA employment issues.
DIVERSITY GOAL: Increase diversity within the Council, celebrate and promote diversity across the University and Columbus community.
(Co-)sponsor quarterly activities, open to the entire Columbus community which celebrate and promote diversity.
Survey the Council on diversity statistics not measured by the University.
Fill all of our diversity positions on the Executive Committee and at the university level.
Amend constitution to better reflect the additional ethnic and minority student membership.
Advocate for domestic partners benefits for students including health insurance, access to married student housing, library privileges, et cetera.
Advocate for increased legal assistance for international students.
Create an internal report on international student concerns based on information gathered at the 2001 International Student Symposium.
HOUSING GOAL: Increase on-campus housing for graduate students and expand housing support services both on- and off-campus.
Monitor development of and ensure graduate student input on current graduate/professional housing complex.
Work with the Office of Off-Campus Student Services to coordinate services to locate appropriate housing for graduate students.
Obtain reduced rates for pre-academic year room rental for students arriving early.
Invite the President of the Jones Tower Council to speak quarterly at Council meetings.
Investigate and report on meal plan options for graduate students.
Follow up on University commitment to build graduate housing near the University Gateway.
Partner with Campus Partners to identify a new Campus Partners graduate student trustee.
OUTREACH GOAL: Make the CGS commitment to outreach and engagement a priority to parallel the University's "top 5 issues".
Identify a leader for our outreach efforts.
(Co-)sponsor at least two opportunities for graduate student participation in outreach and engagement activities.
Partner with USG to promote sustained financial contributions to the University District Involvement Fund.
Maintain support for off-campus safety and improvement.
Appoint a graduate student to the OSU Council on Outreach and Engagement.
ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT GOAL: Expand the opportunities and resources available to graduate students for their academic and professional growth.
Expand and promote the Council's Professional Development Fund.
Expand and promote the Edward F. Hayes Graduate Research Forum.
Obtain a centralized listing of all available GA positions on campus.
Establish a working group to explore a larger vision and role for the Professional Development Fund.
Provide input on the GEC restructuring and other issues of liberal education at Ohio State.
Monitor budget restructuring for adverse effects on graduate education.
Advocate for multidisciplinary workshops on curriculum and scholarship.
Advocate for an expanded mission for the Office of Faculty and TA Development and a greater partnership between FTAD and the Graduate School in joint programming.
Serve as a resource for graduate students seeking mediation of grievances.
VISIBILITY AND RESPECT GOAL: Use strategic communication to improve the visibility and respect for the Council.
Strive for 100% graduate student representation and active participation on all university committees.
Ensure that CGS is recognized as the appointing authority for graduate students on university committees.
Keep visible the needs of non-funded graduate students.
Strengthen relations with the Graduate School and with the Graduate Studies Chairpersons across campus.
Actively recruit qualified student trustee applicants.
Produce a CGS informational brochure and a promotional item for wide distribution.
Maintain and distribute a comprehensive CGS calendar.
Develop and maintain an effective website, including the production of an on-line newsletter, the E-Voice.
Make better use of advertising, both on- and off-campus.
Utilize delegates as our best information channels for receiving feedback and conveying information in a timely manner.
Develop and maintain the necessary contact lists and databases for better communication and networking across the campus.
Utilize the Student Activities & Campus Programming and the Office of Academic Affairs calendar publications to promote Council events.
Ensure transparency in CGS procedures.
Publish the achievements from the previous year's Annual Goals and Priorities.
Establish a Lobby Day.
ORGANIZATIONAL STRENGTH GOAL: Improve member participation and the internal structures to create a responsive organization with the appropriate management support systems.
Fill 2/3 of delegate seats and strive for 50% attendance at all meetings.
Improve delegate orientation.
Strive for 100% graduate student representation and active participation on all university committees.
Actively recruit multiple candidates for officer elections.
Identify to all Graduate Studies Chairs and graduate student organizations delegate vacancies in their programs.
Conduct a thorough review of the CGS Constitution and Bylaws and amend both to improve the organization.
Recognize notable graduate student accomplishments at monthly Council meetings and CGS delegates annually for outstanding committee service.
Provide greater social opportunities for graduate students.
Rebuild and maintain a thorough file system, databases, and archives.
Establish a working group to explore a larger vision and role for the Professional Development Fund.
Section 3. This act will take effect
immediately upon approval at a regular meeting of the Council of
Graduate Students.
