Resolution 0102-AU-011

CGS Resolution Calling for Tolerance and Respect for Diversity

Author: Marsha Robinson, Diversity Committee Chair (robinson.696@osu.edu)

Passed September 28, 2001

WHEREAS The Ohio State University is a diverse community comprising undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, faculty, staff, and neighbors from over one hundred nations and a wide range of ethnicities and cultures, sexual orientations and socioeconomic backgrounds; and

WHEREAS The Ohio State University is dedicated to respecting this diversity and creating a university community in which students, faculty, staff and neighbors feel welcome, safe and secure; and

WHEREAS the United States and many of its present allies have at some point in time not always enjoyed the current sense of community and mutual respect; and

WHEREAS this country is peopled with immigrants and descendants of immigrants, those who voluntarily or involuntarily left their natal land to make a life here or were incorporated into the borders of the United States; and,

WHEREAS the Middle East is also a diverse community where people adhere to a variety of ethnicities and cultures, sexual orientations and socioeconomic backgrounds; and,

WHEREAS Islam, among other faiths, is a global religion with many variations and is practiced by persons from all areas of the planet; and,

WHEREAS The Ohio State University community includes thousands of persons who choose to be Muslim and thousands of individuals who are of Middle Eastern descent; and,

WHEREAS in the aftermath of the tragic attacks and enormous loss of life which occurred on September 11, 2001, many Americans are horrified and angered; and

WHEREAS a small minority across the country, in a desire for revenge against those responsible for the attacks, are levying verbal abuse, violence, and even death against people whom they accuse of being enemies because these additional victims are perceived to be Muslims or of Middle Eastern descent due to their ethnic, cultural, and religious orientation; and,

WHEREAS such acts of stereotyping, harassment, and violence are illegal and also antithetical to the values of this University, and violate the Student Code of Conduct; and

WHEREAS to sink to such a level would give victory to the assailants involved in the events of September 11, 2001,

LET IT THEREFORE BE RESOLVED that the Council of Graduate Students:

CALLS UPON all members of the university community to honor the growing sense of global community by resisting the urge to hate anyone in our campus family because of the heinous attack on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the world,

CALLS UPON all graduate students and members of the university community to take the lead in rising above any form of racial or ethnic stereotyping or any acts of hatred; and

CALLS UPON all graduate students to participate in creating a campus atmosphere which celebrates our diversity and makes all students feel welcome, safe and secure; and

CALLS UPON the President of the Council of Graduate Students to forward this resolution to the university administration, send a message to all graduate students with this call, and work to help create such a climate.
