A Resolution Concerning "Soft" Domestic Partner Benefits for Graduate Students

WHEREAS the University has a non-discrimination policy (Policy No. 1.10) which states "...discrimination against any individual for reasons of race, color, creed, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, disability, or Vietnam-era veteran status is specifically prohibited. Accordingly, equal access to employment opportunities, admissions, educational programs, and all other University activities is extended to all persons..."; and

WHEREAS the University's Diversity Action Plan states that "the university is committed to becoming a leader within the higher education community with regard to diversity..."; and

WHEREAS President Kirwan is working towards offering "soft" domestic partner benefits such as group life insurance, global care services, family leave, and discounts on special events to the university community,

THEREFORE LET IT BE RESOLVED that the Council of Graduate Students supports offering "soft" domestic partner benefits to all members of the university community, including graduate students; and

LET IT BE FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of Graduate Students commends President Kirwan's actions and pledges its support of his goals; and

LET IT BE FINALLY RESOLVED that the Council of Graduate Students aggressively advocate for these benefits, charging the President of the Council of Graduate Students to communicate to the President of the University, the Board of Trustees, and all other appropriate groups the Council's position on this matter established by the present resolution.
