RESOLUTION 0203-WI-015
A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING REDUCED-COST OFF-CAMPUS HIGH-SPEED INTERNET ACCESS
Author: Kurt M. Pickett (pickett.23)
Sponsor: Academic and Human Resources Policy Committee
Passed January 17, 2003
WHEREAS the current Homenet off-campus dial-in modem internet service is no longer actively supported by the University; and
WHEREAS the Internet has become a standard and ubiquitous means of accessing educational information both in and outside the classroom; and
WHEREAS many of OSU's introductory and advanced courses use the internet as a primary means of information and course-material dissemination; and
WHEREAS high-speed access is essential for internet library services such as JSTOR, SSI, and LEXUS/NEXUS; and
WHEREAS OSUWeb.net provides only 56kb service and does not provide the constant connectivity or high speed access that would be achievable with modern broadband internet service; and
WHEREAS some universities, including the University of Wisconsin, have negotiated arrangements with providers of broadband internet service to provide their students such service at affordable cost,
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Council of Graduate Students strongly encourages University officials to arrange for the establishment of off-campus high-speed internet service at substantially reduced cost to the students of OSU.
