RESOLUTION 0203-WI-019

A RESOLUTION CONCERNING THE LEGISLATIVE PLATFORM OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF GRADUATE-PROFESSIONAL STUDENTS

WHEREAS the National Association of Graduate-Professional Students adopted its 2003 Federal Legislative Platform on November 9, 2002, during the Association’s 17th Annual Conference in St. Louis, Missouri; and

WHEREAS the 2003 Federal Legislative Platform reasonably balances the national security realities of post-September 11, 2001, and the need to enhance graduate and professional education opportunities for American and foreign students; and

WHEREAS the 2003 Federal Legislative Platform calls for reasonable changes to student loan administration, fees, and repayment for the purpose of providing incentives for the pursuit of advanced degrees and for the application of knowledge to non-profit organizations and underserved areas of the United States; and

WHEREAS the 2003 Federal Legislative Platform calls for the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act, an increase in Federal research grant funding, and an increase in Federal fellowship funding levels; and

WHEREAS the 2003 Federal Legislative Platform calls for reasonable tax code changes, most notably the exemption of graduate stipends from Federal income; and

WHEREAS the 2003 Federal Legislative Platform calls for reasonable measures designed to improve graduate student quality of life,

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Council of Graduate Students supports the spirit of the National Association of Graduate-Professional Students 2003 Federal Legislative Platform; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of Graduate Students support the implementation efforts of the National Association of Graduate-Professional Students by contacting members of the Ohio Congressional delegation and by participating in the National Association of Graduate-Professional Students coordinated lobbying activities during February 2003 in Washington, DC; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of Graduate Students charge the Legislative Affairs Committee with leading the Council’s activities on behalf of the National Association of Graduate-Professional Students 2003 Federal Legislative Platform.
