A RESOLUTION REQUESTING CGS FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR ON-CAMPUS SCREENING OF WORLD-CUP CRICKET MATCHES

WHEREAS cricket is a popular sport played in many nations around the world; and
WHEREAS World Cup Cricket Championships are organized every four years; and
WHEREAS current World Cup matches are underway in South Africa, and will continue until March 23, 2003, with the most important matches occurring in the final weeks; and
WHEREAS fourteen cricket playing nations including Australia, Britain, Canada, India, Pakistan, Netherlands, South Africa, West Indies, Zimbabwe are participating in the tournament; and
WHEREAS channels telecasting the matches are not readily available at reasonable cost for off-campus students; and
WHEREAS no channels are available for on-campus students; and
WHEREAS UNITS has agreed to broadcast all World Cup matches on channels 81 and 82 available throughout the campus for a total charge of $3000.00; and
WHEREAS arrangements have been made to allow off-campus students to watch key matches at Royer Activities Center; and
WHEREAS arrangements are being made for additional viewing sites such as the Ohio Union, and the Raney Commons; and
WHEREAS contributions have been raised from following offices and organizations: Office of International Education, UNITS, USG, Residence Hall Advisory Council, Minority Affairs, Jones Tower Council, Indian Students Association, Pakistan Students Association, Indian American Students Association, and various Undergraduate Hall Councils; and
WHEREAS many individual students, including graduate students have made voluntary personal contributions to help reach the $3000.00 mark.
WHEREAS the organizers of the effort to bring the World-Cup matches to OSU still need to raise more money from organizations to reimburse students who contributed generously; and
WHEREAS any amount raised above $3000.00 from OSU offices and organizations will be used for advertising and refreshments at the viewing of the final championship matches.
WHEREAS this event will lead to better appreciation of diversity and to better cultural enrichment, through enhanced interaction between students,
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Council of Graduate Students support the on-campus cricket match broadcasts by approving a donation for the sum of $500.00 from the budget allocated for Special Projects.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that CGS advertise the availability of the matches to on- and off-campus students on its website and in its monthly newsletter.
