ACT 0203-SP-033
AN ACT AMENDING THE CONSTITUTIONAL DUTIES OF THE VICE PRESIDENT
Authors: J. Briggs Cormier(.5), President and Kerry Hodak(.2), Vice President
Sponsor: The Executive Committee
First reading held on 30 May 2003. Approved on 27 June 2003.
Section 1. The purpose of this amendment is to clarify the constitutional duties of the Vice President. This amendment is presented in accordance with Article XII of the CGS Constitution.
Section 2. The Council on Student Affairs is the committee charged with vetting all issues concerning student life at the institution. CSA recently added a permanent third graduate student seat to its membership. It is essential that the leadership of the Council of Graduate Students be intimately involved with this Senate committee. Traditionally the CGS Vice President has been appointed to this position when the Council has held a third seat (which previously rotated between CGS and IPC).
Section 3. While orientation-related activities and planning falls under the constitutional duties of the Vice President, the original CGS New Graduate Student Orientation has, over time, become a joint project with the Graduate School, no longer coordinated by the vice president. The Welcome Week Steering Committee needs consistent graduate student representation, the inclusion of which is something the Council has called for repeatedly.
Section 4. The CGS Constitution shall be amended as follows:
Section V.4: Vice President
V.4.A. The Vice President coordinates
the CGS New Graduate Student Orientation andthe Edward F. Hayes Graduate Research Forum and represents the Council of Graduate Students in the planning of orientation and welcome week-related activities and events.V.4.B - V.4.E. (no change)
V.4.F. The Vice President serves, externally, on the Council on Student Affairs and the Welcome Week Steering Committee.
V.4.
FG. In the absence of the President, the Vice President presides over meetings of the Council.V.4.
GH. The Vice President shall fulfill other duties as directed by the Council, the Executive Committee, and the President.
Section 5. These changes shall take effect immediately upon
approval per Article XII of the CGS Constitution.
