An Act Renaming the Professional Development Fund "The Edward J. Ray Travel Award For Scholarship And Service"

Section 1. The purpose of this act is to rename the CGS Professional Development Fund "The Edward J. Ray Travel Award for Scholarship and Service".
Section 2. The Professional Development Fund was established in 1998 with seed funds from the Graduate School and the Office of Research to provide travel opportunities to graduate students at Ohio State who demonstrated not only outstanding scholarship but also a commitment to service to the broader Ohio State and local community.
Section 3. After its pilot year, the Council maintained the fund with its own resources, later devoting the interest income from our Coca-Cola Endowment in its entirety to the fund.
Section 4. In 2003, Executive Vice President and Provost Edward J. Ray, in an effort to make progress towards fulfilling the Academic Plan and partially in response to the results of the Graduate Quality of University Experience (G-QUE) Report permanently transferred to the Council $35,000 in annual rate from his strategic investment funds to supplement our efforts at enhancing the professional development opportunities of graduate students at Ohio State.
Section 5. In recognition of Provost Ray’s commitment to graduate students at The Ohio State University and to the efforts of the Council of Graduate Students and in recognition of his appointment as President of Oregon State University, the Professional Development Fund is hereby renamed "The Edward J. Ray Travel Award for Scholarship and Service".
Section 6. This act will, upon approval at a regular meeting
of the Council of Graduate Students, take effect beginning with the
Autumn 2003 competition, whereupon the Council's Professional
Development Fund Committee will be renamed the Ray Award Committee. At
that time, all references in the CGS Standing Rules to the
Professional Development Fund (PDF) shall be altered to refer to "The
Edward J. Ray Travel Award for Scholarship and Service (the Ray
Award)".
