A Resolution Supporting Student Activism

Approved 31 October 2003.
WHEREAS The Ohio State University is home to students who have sharply divided viewpoints on a wide range of campus and political affairs; and
WHEREAS thousands of OSU students have organized themselves into recognized student organizations strongly advocating for or against these sharply divided interests; and
WHEREAS past events at OSU indicate a high likelihood that these communities can be strongly and adversely affected by statements made by other organizations and people; and
WHEREAS there exists on campus the possibility for extreme misunderstanding between various students and student organizations representing strongly opposed beliefs and positions; and
WHEREAS The Ohio State University is a place for intense, thoughtful, respectful and open discussion and disagreement of all beliefs and opinions; and
WHEREAS The Ohio State University encourages an academic environment where tolerance and mutual respect abounds; and
WHEREAS freedom of speech is a guaranteed right to all individuals, and is especially valuable in an academic environment,
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Council of Graduate Students respects and encourages vigorous student activism; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of Graduate Students demands that all students and student organizations respect the rights of other students and student organizations; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of Graduate Students demands that all students and student organizations engaging in activism on our campus do so lawfully and in such a way that does not infringe upon the rights of others.
