A RESOLUTION ON RESPECT AND FAIR TREATMENT OF ALL MEMBERS OF THE OHIO STATE COMMUNITY

WHEREAS the Council previously has taken positions affirming mutual respect and fair treatment of all individuals at Ohio State and;

WHEREAS recent events have brought to light the fact that individuals who are perceived to be of Middle Eastern descent continue to be viewed with suspicion and treated substantially worse than others at this University, not only by other students, but also by administrative arms of the University; and

WHEREAS such acts often rise to the level of outright discrimination and harassment, both of which are expressly condemned by University policy and the University's Diversity Action Plan; and

WHEREAS no individual on campus, be s/he student, faculty, staff, or guest, deserves to be treated as less than his/her neighbor; and

WHEREAS ignorance is no excuse to mistreat one's fellow humans; and

WHEREAS an environment supportive of diversity in all its forms enriches the community and enhances the educational process at a university,

THEREFORE LET IT BE RESOLVED that the Council of Graduate Students condemns all acts of stereotyping by faculty, staff, students, and guests at Ohio State; and

LET IT BE FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council calls upon the University administration to publicly condemn such treatment of anyone on campus; and

LET IT BE FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council calls upon the University to implement educational programs for faculty, staff, and students in an effort to eliminate discrimination, harassment, and misunderstanding at Ohio State; and

LET IT BE FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of Graduate Students charges its President to communicate to the Ohio State University President, the Executive Vice President and Provost, the Senior Vice President for Business and Finance, the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Dean of the Graduate School, and all other appropriate groups the Council's position on this matter as established by this resolution.
